Class Ring

On my mother’s side, I had 1 sister and 2 brothers. My sister is the oldest, then I have 2 brothers. I wasn’t that close to my sister(12 yrs older than me)and my oldest brother(10 yrs older than me) as they both grew up in Alabama with our big momma(grandmother). The youngest older brother(9 yrs older than me) is who I grew up with, Kelvin.

Kelvin and I although 9yrs older than me were extremely close. When my parents argued he was my safe haven. He was my protector. When he dated girls, if they didn’t like or get along with me, he didn’t date them that long.

I remember him and my mom having this terrible fight and he left. He went to live with his grandmother(paternal) who lived within walking distance. He rode a motorcycle so it was a five-minute ride instead of a 10-minute walk. He left during the week but that Friday he came to pick me up and I stayed with him and his grandmother that weekend and every weekend. When he passed I continued to go his grandmother’s every weekend. My way of still being with him.

His death hit me hard. Years later I was given his senior class ring which I hold close and dear to my heart.
